Okanagan Paddlers announce ambitious plans on World Water Day
By: Mark Jennings-Bates
Two Okanagan paddlers are hoping to set a record later in the year to celebrate the relatively abundant water resource we have in the Okanagan as compared to other geographic locations around the world.

Paddleboard instructor, Peter Dodenhoff has teamed up with Mark Jennings-Bates, local philanthropic adventurer to paddle the circumference of Lake Okanagan in an effort to raise money for local charity Rally4Life.

“Water stewardship is critical in our world and as we paddle around the lake, we will be taking time to speak to the public and schools and highlight the issues facing us in the future with a potential erosion of available water and quality of water with climate change issues” said Dodenhoff who has been promoting the sport of Stand Up Paddling for several years now.

The team will be promoting their endeavour at several festivals and gatherings throughout the year and will be raising funds for safe water projects around the world.

“Today is World Water Day and it is entirely appropriate that we announce our intentions to paddle the approximate 280km around the lake. As we enjoy the amazing scenery we have here in the Okanagan and take time to appreciate the abundant water resource we have, my mind will be recalling recent trips to Africa. I will be thinking about the people I have met over the last several years who have to remove animal faeces from the surface of otherwise dirty water to drink. We may be celebrating clean, safe water, but we still have a ways to go to help other people get access to a similar resource” added Jennings-Bates, an advocate for the Rally4Life charity.

The project, aptly named SUP4Life currently sponsored by Cool Surf, will be announcing a major international partner in the next few weeks and hope to garner media attention throughout the year as they train and prepare for their exciting journey.

Their final date will be announced in the near future and updates can be found at

“We really would like this to be a positive event” said Jennings-Bates, adding “It is a celebration of the sport of paddling, in the process we can help better other peoples lives and truly learn to appreciate what we have here in the Okanagan, it is a spectacular resource.”

Rally4Life is a Canadian charity with a goal to initially raise $4 million to save 200,000 lives with the provision of safe water to impoverished communities around the globe. To date they have financed several wells for communities in Northern Kenya.  According the the UN, significant progress has been made in the last several years in terms of access to safe water. The Millennium Development goals set criteria for access to many critical life sustaining resources and reports indicate that we are exceeding expectations when it comes to providing safe water..

Marie Buchanan excels in Peru on her 12’6” Red Race
By: Red Paddle Co.

We are delighted to report that Marie Buchanan has just returned from the ISA SUP World Championships in Peru after coming 6th in the women’s distance race and 5th in the women’s technical race.

Marie was competing at the international event for the first time on her Red Paddle Co 12’6” Race board which she had been training hard on before the event back home in the United Kingdom. Marie did an amazing job in all the races she competed in and was even leading the technical race semi final half way through, due to some fantastic wave-riding and board handling skills.

Since arriving home we caught up with Marie to ask her about her experiences: “Thanks for all your messages of support before after the racing, it has been such an amazing experience! The amount of cheers I got from the crowd and personal compliments after my races from other competitors (including the likes of Nikki Gregg, Angie Jackson and Justin Holland) was just incredible. I felt like a Rock Star!! Thanks so much to everyone who Supported me before, during and after the event. I’m so glad I decided to go :-)”

Marie achieved this amazing feat on a Red Paddle Co inflatable board, competing against full carbon race boards. Red Paddle Co’s mission is to produce boards that o er no compromise in performance, Marie’s achievements are testament to this. With reports of other competitors equipment being lost by the airlines or damaged in transport, the fact that Marie could carry her board with her meant she had no such worries.

We hope you can all appreciate Marie’s amazing achievement and we are very proud to have been able to help her compete so well.
