Rob Rojas Overpowers Elite Field to Win O'Neill SEA Paddle NYC |
|
By: Kurent
|
|
Newest member of O'Neill team takes 26.5-mile stand up paddle race in 3 hours and 56 minutes, ahead of more than 200 racers.
Irvine, Calif. (August 12, 2011) - O'Neill (www.oneill.com), the original surf, snow and youth lifestyle brand, is proud to congratulate its own Rob Rojas for his impressive performance at today's O'Neill SEA Paddle NYC, claiming first place overall with a lightning-quick time of 3 hours and 56 minutes. The win marks Rob's 20th professional victory of his four-year racing career, and fourth as a member of O'Neill's athlete roster.
Rojas came into the race training on a new 14-foot board, a required size for the elite race. This new board size, or New York City's elements, didn't deter the 37 year old, who finished under the iconic Brooklyn Bridge well ahead of Annabel Anderson (4 hours, 13 minutes) and Thomas Gallagher (4 hours, 16 minutes). Set against the backdrop of midtown Manhattan, the Bronx and Brooklyn, more than 200 elite and amateurs started from Pier 40 on the West Side, making their way north around the island, finishing on the East Side.

Puma/Laird Board Selected for Gear of Show Award by Outside Magazine |
|
By: Puma
|
BOSTON, MA – The new PUMA/Laird Board, a limited-edition carbon fiber stand-up paddleboard (SUP), was selected by Outside Magazine for a 2011 Gear of the Show Award at the Outdoor Retailer trade show on Friday. Outside editors named their favorite 10 outdoor gear products from Outdoor Retailer, held in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the PUMA/Laird Board was the lone watercraft to make this year’s list.
PUMA, professional surfer Laird Hamilton and surfboard manufacturer Surftech introduced the PUMA/Laird Board at the trade show. Hamilton teamed with renowned boat designer Juan Kouyoumdjian (Juan K), of Juan Yacht Design, to create the unique SUP. The board features the same Volvo 70 boat hull design – both ergonomically and through the use of the same ultra-lightweight materials – seen in PUMA’s Mar Mostro, the yacht set to compete in the nine-month around the world Volvo Ocean Race.
Built in the United States by Clear Carbon and Components, Inc. (Bristol, R.I.) and distributed by Surftech (Santa Cruz, Calif.), the board marks the first time that boat hull design innovation have been used in stand-up paddleboards. The boards will be available at select retailers beginning in January 2012.
The PUMA/Laird Board features a foam core carbon fiber center and epoxy matrix covered by red tentacle graphics matching PUMA’s Mar Mostro. Demo PUMA/Laird Boards will be available at each of the port stopovers during the Volvo Ocean Race. The board is designed to provide more agility and speed on the water’s surface, and it offers the ability to maneuver easily in big open ocean waves or in flat, calm water.

The B-1 was designed for a complete range of SUP adventures from rushing river rapids to ripping ocean waves and beyond. Surftech team riders, Dane Jackson, Taylor Robertson and Ken "Hobie" Hoeve have rigorously tested the B-1 in rock infested rivers from Colorado to Tennessee. "The B-1 is sick because its stable for running rivers, strong for hitting the rocks and fast for surfing the waves. It let's you B-1 with your favorite rivers." said 2011 ICF Freestyle Kayak World Champion, Dane Jackson
