Bobby Cooper is the United Kingdom's leading junior stand up paddler. When the press releases went out with the results of the first British Stand Up Paddle Association competition, new stars were born. Stand Up Paddle Surfing Magazine (SUPSURFMAG.COM) was stoked to be able to interview Bobby and gain some insight into who she, where she's from, and how far she plans to take the sport.
SUPSURFMAG: Bobby, you recently won the BSUPA event in West Wittering. You're photos are showing up all over. Who are you, where are you from, and what can you tell us about yourself? BOBBY: Well this is me, 16 and bursting with life, energy and sport! I absolutely love to SUP and surf... the best two things in life! I'm a beach bum and wouldn't be able to live without the coast. I also love to party! At the moment I'm taking my GCSE's at Chichester High school and can't wait to get them over with, so I can head to Cornwall and ride those waves! I live in Wittering with my parents and i work at 2xs windsurfing club on west Wittering beach, best place to be i reckon! I first started windsurfing in 2001 on my mates dads board, it was a right laugh with about 90 litreage... no buoyancy for a beginner. I then got my own kit which I'm now selling. I picked up surfing in 2007 on a foamy and then got my first short board (6'6 escape) in the summer! I'm still surfing with the little swell we have in wittering, its not to great I'd prefer to be in Hawaii!

In this recent news story, Combat to the Core, Staff Sgt. Carlos Diaz discusses strengthening of our service men and women discusses a comprehensive approach to their abdominal training.
Here are a few excerpts:
"Core strength refers to abdominal and back muscles used to support the spine and keep bodies stable and balanced." and
"In general, strength core exercises such as Pilates and yoga have become very popular over the years because they concentrate on building good posture."
In this article it also shows the service men and women engaging in sit-ups. Let’s take this point by point: |

Aloha friends! In our search for ways to raise awareness of the important of proper surf etiquette and positive attitude, Stand Up Paddle Surfing Magazine Assc. Editor Bill Ward put together the text of a flyer to be distributed at surf shops to those who are buying new boards. Any feedback would be much appreciated. You can leave your feedback in the comments box after the article. Also, if you know of any shops that would like stack of the flyers, we would be glad to send them over. Thanks, friends.
Congratulations on your new board and welcome all to the the stand up paddle surfing community. Stand up paddling is the fastest growing water sport in the world, and no doubt, you will have many hours of paddling the beautiful oceans, rivers, harbors, lakes, and perhaps riding waves. Please remember the following four points, and share them with others, as you grow with the sport: RESPONSIBILITY, SAFETY, ETIQUETTE, ALOHA SPIRIT. RESPONSIBILITY: Whether this is your first time on a stand up paddleboard or if you have been doing it for years, we ask that you please take a moment to consider the personal responsibility that you have. Is starts by making sure you boards are securely tightened to your vehicle with properly installed racks. Please take an extra moment to double check every time you transport your boards, as those not properly fastened can fly off your vehicle and may cause accident or injury. Be safe and always double check.

Chile has been added as one of the surf-laden countries across the globe where the seeds of stand up paddle surfing are sprouting, soon to be in full bloom. Arnaud Frennet is one one of the stand up paddle pioneers in the South American country of Chile and has given us a look into the beginnings for stand up paddle surfing in the land of endless coastline. Arnaud is has lived all over the world from Belgium to France, Denmark, Canary Islands, Baja, Hawaii, and finally Chile where he met a local girl and found his home. They are a surfing family whose eldest daughter recently competed in a local Chilean contest. Arnaud is an avid stand up paddler. SUPSURFMAG: Where are you located
and what kind of surf do you have locally?
ARNAUD: I live in
Chile’s top wine country, Colchagua Valley, but have a beach house in Punta de
Lobos, an hour and half away, where we spend every weekend. Punta de Lobos has
become quite famous in the last years since chilean surfer Diego Medina won the
Monster Paddle XXL award riding a huge wave there. The spot handles all size of
swells, tiny to huge, and is generally very consistent. Water is freezing
cold...air temperature is also quite fresh.

We recently had a chance to sit down with Jim Smith, CSCS of the Diesel Crew and the author of Combat Core . We were able to get the low down on his new product and talk to him about what "real" core strength is all about.
Question:
Jim, First off, thanks for the interview. What do you think is the
biggest mistake most trainers make when trying to develop core strength?
[JS] Most trainers focus on what I have dubbed building strength of movement patterns.
What they fail to realize is that this is only one piece of the total
puzzle. Building strength in the gym with movements like leg lifts,
sit-ups, reverse sit-ups and so on...is a compliment to a bigger, more
comprehensive core strength program. There are other criteria that make up the rest of the pyramid that I have established in Combat Core. |
