The QuickSilverEdition Ku Ikaika was an outstanding event! The vibe was good and the competitors were charging. It was a rider/board showcase of talent and equipment that everyone was stoked on. When we got the word about the event Bill Ward picked me up and we cruised over to Makaha to check it out. Just as we arrived and set up our area on the sand, some of the biggest sets of the day rolled through and it was extremely rare to see a set roll through unridden. All the surfers were truly charging, taking off soooo deep and screaming accross the face set on making it to the channel before getting swallowed by the bowl. It was truly awesome. Some memorable moments that come to mind just off hand was Aaron Napolean racing down one of the biggest waves of the day, making a huge critical section, and pulling into the biggest barrel of the day. I recall Blane Chambers firing down the line on what could have been the biggest wave of the day. Then there was Chuck Patterson pulling some of the biggest floaters I have ever seen on any kind of surfboard. Also, I believe it was Kamu Auwae who cranked out a huge helicopter revert on the inside section.

It was incredible to see the huge spread of boards and fins. There were single fin pin tails, customs guns, stock boards, swallow tails, cutaways, and rounded pins of all lengths shapes and sizes. Most of the fins seemed to be cutaway fins or traditional fins with a little more rake to them. Aaron Napolean won the event on an off the shelf stock Paddle Surf Hawaii 10'2" with a stock fin. That guy was so stoked just to advance through each round. He went dancing down to the water for the finals while everyone in the PSH cheered and hollered for him.

There is so much to say about the event: board shapes, fin setups, riders, teams, the waves, and technique. We'll be sure to bring it all to you as quickly as possible. Also, watch for our radio show and videos from the event. Aloha.
