The opening ceremonies for the Eddie Aikau took place just a few days ago. Bill Ward reported that two stand up paddlers paddled out with the group, Garrett McNamara and Tony Moniz. It is truly and honor to have the sport represented at such a momentous occasion.
Winter waves tip #1: check the buoys. Glancing at the buoys for today, the swell is supposed to jump from 2-4' to 12-18' (18-25'+ faces) in less than 24 hours. I'm sure most of us can recall getting caught outside when the swell rolls in. I recall surfing in Haleiwa three years ago when those sets started rolling in. After about 10 minutes of hoping there would be a lull or that some smaller ones would come through, I realized that I was stuck, each set coming through bigger than the last. I ended up paddling in close to the shoulder until I got pounded and washed in. Ahhh, good times! Lesson learned, check the buoys before paddling out. Have an awesome weekend everyone!
