To my surprise Aaron (Napoleon) and Justin paddled out at our local break this morning to catch a few waves. Aaron recently won the Ku Ikaika big wave stand up paddle contest in Makaha and was out on that winning board this morning. The waves were fanstastic. There were at least 3 photographers on the beach and a videographer. Kanoa Dahlin was absolutely ripping out there on his longboard. That guys is such a good surfer. He takes off right at the peak and uses every part of the wave on his rides. He's off the top, cutting back, just all over. When I see surfers like that, on any kind of board, it always motivates me to try something new and make better use of the wave. On a stand up paddle surfboard it's so easy to stay in the comfort zone and just cruise it to the channel. In my book, there's absolutely nothing wrong with cruising it to the channel, but when I see a guy like Kanoa taking 3 or 4 critical drops in one wave, I want to do that as well. On some of the waves he was riding, I probably would have dropped in content to just make that one drop and get out, but this guys is up and down, just playing off the lip. Hey, if I have it set in my mind, I'll be there soon enough.
