Hulakai Trials and the first Round of the Sunset Beach Pro, presented by Red Nose
By: Waterman League
The kick off of the Waterman League's Stand Up Paddle World Tour had an anxious build-up, as athletes from around the world would come together to mingle, compete, and inevitably judge and be judged by their respected peers, and the North Shore would be host to yet another event close to others by date, yet distanced by medium... SUP.
The Sunset Beach Pro, set to be the most groundbreaking event for this incredibly versatile sport exploding in every direction bears the significance of holding the first event of the Tour in Hawaii at one of its most celebrated breaks. Greeted by 8 - 10 ft perfect Sunset and 32 of Hawaii's most promising talents, the Hulakai Trials has set the standard for World Tour qualification.
The assembled athletes ages ranged from as young as 12, to athletes in their late forties/early fifties - a true and exciting representation of the sheer scope of the sport: esteemed and vastly experienced Waterman battling it out against the new generation.
As the heats progressed in what can only be called epic Sunset, the assembled crowds were wowed by the spectacular action displayed in each and every heat. Stand outs in the Hulakai Trials were undoubtedly the youth, in the form of Slater Trout (15, Maui) and Riggs Napolean, at just 12 years old (Oahu), but also our Big Island contingent in the form of Hulakai's very own, Kalani Kahalioumi and Kainoa Hauanio. Also delivering memorable performances were Eraldo Gueiros from Brazil and Haley Fiske from California.

Stand Up Paddle Board Review of Pau Hana SG1 Semi-Gun
By: Stand Up Paddle Surfing Magazine
After design testing in both California and the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii, the SG1 semi-gun stand up paddle board by Pau Hana Surf Supply is in production and now available nationwide. In pure simplicity, the SG1 is a true semi-gun stand up paddle board with a pulled in nose, sleek lines, and a pulled in tail.
While the board does not fall into the one-stick-quiver category of do-it-all boards, the SG1 by Pau Hana delivers true semi-gun performance in a variety of conditions. Stand Up Paddle Surfing Magazine took the SG1 through it’s paces in both small and big surf. In this review, we’ll look first at the shape, dimensions, and design, then performance.
Fire and Ice at the Cold Stroke Classic Stand Up Paddle Race
By: Mark Colino
It all started with a call and an email from Jeoffrey Nathans at Coastal Urge in Wilmington, North Carolina inviting me to bring some Starboard demo boards to his January 9th “Cold Stroke Classic”. The Cold Stroke is a 3.5mile recreational stand up paddle race and a 7 mile “Elite” pro race on the Intracoastal Waterway, with a cash purse for men and women. What a great way to start the New Year! Head south (I am from New Jersey), get warm, meet new people, go for a fast paddle. Chuck Patterson was giving a clinic the day before and hosting a dinner and video presentation at night. Well… 7 hours into the 10 hour drive my van blew a transmission, caught on fire, and left my friend Navroze and I stranded on a cold dark highway in the middle of the night. We eventually got towed, rented a truck, transferred all the gear, and made our way the last 3 hours to the coast while the good folks at Colony auto repair began work on my van.
Resist Wrist Pain and Fatigue While Stand Up Paddling
By: Nikki Gregg, CPT
It may be a small joint, but it can cause some serious discomfort and fatigue after a long paddle if you’re not aware of proper wrist angles. In this article, I will briefly discuss structure and function of the wrist, proper paddling technique, and how to strengthen your wrists to protect them from injury.
Structure and Function:
The wrist joint is extremely complex, but is basically the joint where the ulnar and radius bones of the forearm meet up with the carpal bones of the hand. The wrist is designed to be very mobile to give our hands a full range of motion with fifteen bones that connect the hand to the forearm. Take into account that there are also many ligaments, tendons, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels that make up the structure of the wrist. All these components work together to allow us to flex and extend the hand, straighten our fingers, and make a fist.
Unfortunately, the wrist is not meant to support bodyweight. Too much weight coupled with too many repetitions (such as high repetition push ups with your palms on the ground) is tough on your wrist joint and can cause tendinitis. That’s why paying attention to your wrist angles while stand up paddling is so important.
