There are many stand up paddle surfers out there, myself included, who came
from the school of surfing where you just grabbed whatever board Dad would let
you take out, or whatever board your friend brought to the beach for you to use.
We wouldnít think twice about the shape and never about the fins. As far was we
were concerned, fins were all one shape and came from this mysterious fin
factory somewhere in surfboard wonderland. Every board came with them and so
long and there was at least one on
there, you were all set.
Whether itís age, wisdom, or something else, Iím not
sure, but recently there are many of us that have been experimenting with fins
and discovering amazing differences in the performance with the simple fin swap
or adjustment in fin placement. For this
reason, we are announcing the launch of a series of stand up paddle surfing articles titled Finsights. In these articles, youíll
discover insights from traditional and progressive fins designs to testimonials
about how certain fins perform in varying conditions. We donít claim the series
to be the definitive source on fin design. However, if we can give you a tip or
two that improves your performance and quality of time on the water, we would consider
that a success.
will first be published on the the front page of SUPSURFMAG.COM and will also
be found in the PERFORMANCE >> EQUIPMENT section of the website. If you
would like to contribute your experience or if you know of a fin that simply
must be made known to stand up paddlers worldwide, shoot us an email at
. Itís time
to get fin-crazy. Enjoy the series.
