Surftech has definitely got all their ducks in a row with their 2008 lineup of stand up paddle surfboards. Surftech was founded in 1989 by Randy French whose background in surfing and windsurfing drove him to experiment with innumerable materials in an effort to create boards that are light and strong.

The earliest models were the wood veneer models that are still being produced today by Surftech. Advances in Suftech’s wood veneer, Tuflite and TL2 construction have made Surftech surfboards some of the strongest, most durable boards available anywhere. What does that mean for the stand up paddler? Proven stand up paddle surfboard shapes and paddles by Robert August, Laird Hamilton, Mickey Munoz, Softops, and Donald Takayama with the technology for performance and board longevity. Now for a quick review of the Surftech SUP lineup…     Wingnut by Robert August: (length 11” / width 28” / thick 4”) “Wingnut’s 11 ft SUP has an early entry rocker and foiled rails giving it a classic glide. Befitting of Wingnut's style, these boards smoothly turn and carve across waves, combining stability with performance.” (Surftech. 2008. Available:

Laird by Bill Hamilton: (length 11’6” / width 29” / thick 4.38) “Designed specifically for standup paddling, the Laird standup paddleboard has a wide and thick template with a flat bottom for stability. Low rocker for speed and pulled in tail for maneuverability.” (Surftech. 2008. Available:

Super-Glide by Mickey Munoz: (length 12” / width 26.25” / thick 4.25”) “Mickey has shaped thousands of boards, designed numerous boats, help create snowboards and shaped us these stunning 12'0" Super-Glide models. Available in wood veneer or TUFLITE ® construction” (Surftech. 2008. Available:

Ali’i IV by Donald Takayama: (length 10’3 / width 27” / thick 4”) “Takayama's Alii range of SUP’s are geared for wave riding. With a rounded pin tail and thruster fin set up, these are the most progressive SUP boards on the market, designed for serious surfers wanting to crossover to SUP surfing” (Surftech. 2008. Available:

Softops: (vary) “Softops from Surftech are the perfect first surfboard for the beginner. The high-performance surfboards are the LIGHTEST entry level boards on the market. With new, MORE DURABLE EVA rubber designs, the new Softop line-up is ideal for the entry level to intermediate surfer.” (Surftech. 2008.     Stand up paddle glass shaft paddle by Randy French: These quality paddles are durable, strong and affordable. They retail at for only $260. A killer paddle to accompany a killer board.

I see the new boards have a hand slot for ease of carrying. Are these available to retrofit existing boards?
