gargoyles-logo-lg.jpgNeoprene straps and cords are a definitely an option for keeping your shades in place while stand up paddling, however, the most secure high performance sunglasses we have found thus far are the Gamer and Rover collections by Gargoyles.

When Gargoyles told us they’d like us to send us some glasses and put them to the test, we accepted the challenge and eagerly awaited their arrival. When they arrived, we quickly put them to the test and even used them in this year’s Battle of the Paddle Hawaii.

The Gamer and the Rover are part of the Gargoyles Function Collection which were developed for performance and are commonly seen being used by many Major League Baseball players. Now let’s look more closely at the Function Collection and stand up paddling. Here's our review:

rover-matteblack-blue-lens.jpgFor extended paddle sessions, the Gamer and Rover are extremely comfortable. Unlike traditional sunglasses, that normally leave the wearer with pressure on the bridge of the nose and above the ears, Gargoyles have been carefully crafted to almost completely eliminate these pressure points. How?

First, the curved and contoured frame fits comfortably around your temples and ears.  The frame then seamlessly leads to a comfortable, fully adjustable, head strap to keep your shades in place at all times. Second, non-stick urethane nose pads with an extra nose bridge support (see image), make for an incredibly comfortable fit on the nose with even pressure distribution. The nogargoyles-nosebridgesupport.jpgse bridge support is not mentioned on the Gargoyles website but we found it to be a huge contributor to the comfort of the sunglasses. Finally, the lightweight design, particularly of the Rover, makes extended wear easy.

The Gargoyle Gamer and Rover both feature flip up lenses so you can quickly switch between natural light and sun-filtered light. We found this useful for down-wind stand up paddling when wanting to see natural light without taking the time to use both hands to remove the sunglasses, or put them back on again.

gargoylesgamer.jpgStand up paddle fishermen also may find the flip-up feature useful being able to quickly flip up the lenses to tie a fishhook, land a catch, or sort through the tackle box. The secure design of the glasses also means stand up paddlers won’t have to worry about them falling off their heads and losing them to the ocean.

The Function Collection sunglasses are built tough with Gargoyles shatter resistant Ballistic Defense lenses developed by a blend of polymers by Carl Zeiss Vision. The lens by itself was designed for military, safety, and sport uses, and exceeds the MIL-STD 622 ballistic test.

Other features include Tri-Flection Lens Coating to help prevent lens glare, and Hydro-Fog lens coating to help prevent the condensation that would normally accumulate on the lenses of stand up paddlers as their bodies begin to give off heat.

The Gargoyle Gamer and Rover are an excellent choice for stand up paddlers looking for a secure, distortion free lens that can easily be flipped up and back into place, and
