Mark Colino owns and operates both "No Flat Earth Surf Shop" and "Stand Strong" in Brick, New Jersey. He recently sent us a review of the Playa Hoodie by Hyperflex wetsuits. If you're looking for something comfortable to stand up paddle in without donning a full wetsuit, have a look at this.

Ahhhh, September in Jersey , my favorite time of year. Warm water, warm days and waves with no summertime crowds!

So it came as quite a surprise one September morn when I awoke to clear skies, and 51 Degree air temps?! Sure it would eventually warm up to the low 70’s, but by then I would be at work. So for this brisk dawn patrol I decided it would be a good time to test out Hyperflex’s new neoprene “Playa Hoody”. When it first arrived at the shop I admit I was a little skeptical. It is just what it sounds like, A zip – up hooded sweatshirt body style made out of 2mm smooth skin neoprene. Originally designed as a foul weather surf check piece, it doubles as a great paddling top! It is not as tight fitting as a regular wetsuit top which allows for a greater range of motion.

The smooth skin exterior holds no water, thus making it virtually waterproof as well as windproof. The inside features a hollow fiber lining which pulls moisture off your body and keeps heat in. The full front zip allows you to vent as necessary and regulate your temperature. Some other nice features are the fleeced lined wrists and front pockets as well as internal zippered pockets. The double cinches at the waist and hood allow you to customize the fit.

This is a great piece for flatwater or downwind paddling when its cold out and you know you’re going to get splashed or take an unintentional dip in. It’s also serves a dual purpose as an everyday piece for rain, sleet or snow. I would use this as a go to piece from temps ranging from 55- 35, it’s that good and if you start to overheat, simply lower the front zip. I wore the “Playa Hoody” with nothing underneath it and I was comfortable and rash free after my initial 2 hour test paddle.
