One tent, a blanket, various car parts, clothes, a coffee bean sack, 900 feet of irrigation tubing, and one fresh Spam musubi. That’s just part of the list of debris cleaned out of the Anahulu stream in Haleiwa this summer by Rainbow Watersports Adventures stand up paddle school. After noticing debris on the banks, the school organized monthly clean-ups of this historic river.
Starting over 20 miles upstream in the mountains near Kaneohe, the Anahulu Stream has long been a source of fresh water and life along its banks. Near the mouth of the Anahulu stream was once the location of ancient Hawaiian villages. The river was a treasured resource to King Kamehameha and later to Queen Lilioukalani.
Today, the Anahulu stream is the home to sea turtles, fish, and crabs. Children play in the waters of the Anahulu while residents and visitors alike enjoy the beauty of the waterway in kayaks, canoes, and stand up paddleboards.
Armed with scissors, hedge clippers, and garbage bags, Rainbow Watersports and fellow stand up paddle river cleaners are making the Anahulu an even more pleasant place to be.
Rainbow Watersports Adventures has completed four river cleanups so far, and are determined keep the Anahulu stream the cleanest river on the North Shore through monthly clean-ups.
The next river cleanup is planned for Friday, September 18th at 7:30 am. The meeting point for the clean up is at the Haleiwa Beach Park down the road from Surf-n-Sea by the outrigger canoes lined up on the beach. When you see the colorfully painted Rainbow Watersports Adventures van, you’ll know you’re in the right place.
All are invited so bring your stand up paddle board, canoe, or kayak and help malama aina, “care for the land”. Equipment is available if needed. For more information and to get involved call Rainbow Watersports at (808) 372-9304 or visit www.rainbowwatersports.com
