The Whitewater Stand Up Paddle Championships are taking place Sunday, May 31st on the Colorado River in Glenwood Canyon between Grizzly Creek and Glenwood Whitewater Park in Glenwood Springs. Who would have thought that one day stand up paddlers would be charging the rapids on stand up paddleboards. If we rewind history a year or two back, stand up paddling was thought to be a sport for flat water and small ocean waves only to be done when the conditions are good. Those notions are a thing of the past as stand up paddlers continue to take on grueling conditions both in the ocean and more recently on river rapids. SUP river championships like the upcoming event, once again raise the bar for the sport that continues to flourish worldwide.
This weekend's event is set to begin at 9:30am with the downriver race, followed by the slalom at 11:30am, and surfing at 3:30pm. Specators can come for free and competitors can enter for $35. This is a great opportunity for experienced stand up paddlers to get out on the water and participate in a local event and for those curious about the sport to learn what it's all about. There will be flat-water demos from 10:30am to 12:30pm on Saturday on Blue Lake near El Jebel. C4 Waterman and Tahoe Boardworks will be on the scene so you can check out their latest equipment and get all your questions answered. They will also be at the event itself.
