Chuck Paterson, Hobie/Hennesssy's Waterman's ChallengeDoheny State Beach, Dana Point, CA

The race courses consisted of a 4 mile, 6 mile for 12'6 SUP and an 8 mile for 14' and unlimited SUPs.As the race started on its downwind leg, the northwest wind started blowing and by the time we rounded the downwind buoy, we were met with a strong 15-20 mph headwind and rough seas.

The last 5 miles really challenged your mental and physical toughness because if you hesitated for a second between paddle strokes, you were going backwards. The last 2 miles were the best because that's where I really got my rhythm down and passed a couple strong unlimited paddlers.

For me, this was a great test to see how well I could paddle on a 14' Hobie SUP race board against the 18' unlimited field. Thanks to Hobie, Ocean Minded, Hennessey's and all the other sponsors for another great challenging SUP race and to my sponsors for your support.

Now, here are the photos...

That was a great event! Chuck was totally ahead of the rest of the pack. He set SUP standards up high! It was fun watching the later paddlers racing each other up the beach to the finish. Huffing & puffing - but all smiles. Good times ~N
