Riders prep for the SUP division at Queens.
Saturday June 30th, the third event of the Steinlager Shaka Longboard Series was held at Kuhio Beach in Waikiki. 5-8 foot face waves suited the competition well as surfers competed for the $1,200 purse. Competitors said “Aloha” to friends gathering along Kalakaua and the famous Duke Kahanamoku statue. Surfboards and paddles lined Kuhio Beach Park as the pack of 180 competitors arrived on the scene, over 50 of which were registered for the stand up division. The turnout for the stand up division continues to multiply with each event of the series. The horn sounded from the Steinlager tent at 9:00 am as the Pro-Am division began...
In true Waikiki fashion tourists were already claiming their spots in the sand and lathering up with sun tan oil, thus filling the breeze with the aroma of cocoa butter. Competitors paddled out, through tourists and inflatable rafts, to the break at Queens. The inside position is where the waves were showing their full potential. This is where the competitors continually worked to outposition each other for set waves. With solid waves rolling through in each set, wave choice was critical for everyone in the lineup. Stand up paddle surfers put on an awesome display display of finesse and power with a stylistic blend of classic lines and progressive, quick, snapping turns. In his debut, Kamaka Worthington, winner of the stand up open division, pleased the crowd drawing smooth lines and deep carves into the curling waves. Kai Sallas powered his way to second place. Leleo Kinimaka, who won the last two events of the series placed third, with Dave Parmenter, Brian Keaulana, and Mel Puu placing fourth through sixth. We’ll see you at the next event at Ala Moana Bowls, July 21-22. Final Results: 1) Kamaka Worthington 2) Kai Sallas 3) Leleo Kinimaka 4) Dave Parmenter 5) Brian Keaulana 6) Mel Puu SUPsurfMag…100% Pure Stoke!
