It was all smiles from the stand up paddle finalists at Ala Moana Bowls. "I finally got a left," said Todd Bradley after winning first place in the stand up paddle surfing division of the HSP Steinlager Shaka Longboard series at Ala Moana Bowls in Waikiki. Once again competetors gathered on the water's edge with endless boards and paddles completely stoked for another stand up paddle surfing event. The regular SUP crew was in attendance as well as several first time entrants. Good vibes and sunny weather
prevailedl, and 2-3' surf (traditional Hawaiian scale) provided enough juice for plenty of action.
With another great turnout for the stand up paddlle surfing division, six man heats were in order. Seasoned surfers shined in the early heats advancing to the finals and repo heats. Early in the event, Leleo Kinimaka, Todd Bradley, and Igor Lumertz secured their place for the final heat while Jason Miyamura, Kimo Miranda, Mel Pu'u, Brandon Bradley, Titus Kinimaka, and Kalai Fernandez surfed in the semi-finals for the the remaining three spots in that final heat...
Brandon Bradley, the youngest competitor of the event started off the semi-final heat with a confident performance on the first wave. Kalai Fernandez followed with a turn off the top. The swell had grown throughout the day and presented some prime waves for the semis. Within the first two minutes of the heat, all the competitiors has caught at least one solid wave. The right combination of wind, swell, and the tide came together resulting in some epic rides. Long lefts with an everchanging wave shape allowed compeitiors to show off all their stunts which included head dips, noserides, rail grabs, and even a prone helicopter. Advancing from the semis to the finals were Kalai Fernandez, heat winner, followed by Jason Miyamura, and Titus Kinimaka.
Judges' tent from the water at the Steinlager Longboad Series. When the finals rolled around, SUP fever was in full swing on the beach; even the cameramen were paddling out on stand up paddle surfboards. At the sound of the horn, Titus Kinimaka started off the heat catching the first wave. He was followed by Leleo Kinimaka with a display of switchstance prowess. Leleo's wave was answered by a head coverup by Todd Bradley. Immediately after Todds head dip, Leleo swung his board around to quickly reply with a series of carving turns before Bradley even kickout out of his wave. Gusty off shore winds started to blow the surfers deep, while those who paddled against the wind to stay near the inside section continued to catch waves. Jason Miyamura, taking off deep, grabbed rail for a stylish exit to his next wave. Igor Lumertz snagged a beautiful wave and styled it with a combination of turns and cutbacks. Kalai Fernandez attempted a huge floater but came unglued. With less than one minute in the heat, surfers scrambled for position on the approaching set. Kalai caught another wave that, this time, proved successful for him, and in the closing seconds, Jason Miyamura and Todd Bradley both came through with rail grabs below the curl to close out the heat. As the final competitors paddled in it was smiles and high fives.
The final results of the stand up paddle division of the 4th event of the HSP Steinlager Shaka Longboard Series are as follows:
1st Todd Bradley
2nd Igor Lumertz
3rd Leleo Kinimaka
