Santa Rosa Beach, Fla. – Repeat victories occurred in both the Men’s Division and Women’s Division of the race. Sean Hughes, Joe Serrato, Andy Scheid and Justin Cook, members of the South Walton Lifeguards Black team won first for the Men with a winning time of 19 minutes 6 seconds. Nancy Babin, Julie Ogle, Debbie Hunter, and Jackie Vreuls of the On the Coast Magazine team finished first in the Women’s race with a time of 24 minutes 47 seconds. There were 11 men’s teams competing and seven women’s teams in this race, which was included as part of the festivities of the Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic fishing tournament.
A beautiful evening at Baytowne Marina provided an idyllic setting for the race, which was also broadcast live on a jumbotron that was set up as part of the Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic. Fierce competition among local lifeguards has prevailed in the Men’s Division with the Destin Lifeguard team winning second and the South Walton Lifeguard Gold team winning third. In the Women’s Division, the World Six Boutique and Kitty Hawk Kites-Piranhas teams placed second and third respectively in the race. This race posed an extra challenge for competitors as each team was allowed the use of only one board in the four member relay race.
“We really enjoyed this race,” said Tom Losee, co-founder of YOLO Board. “The one board rule made the action a little tighter and added a new twist for the racers. The Baytowne Marina was a great venue and we had such an excellent spectator turnout. Congrats to all of the winners.” The next race event is scheduled for Thursday July 23rd at Western Lake at WaterColor. The teams will continue on to compete throughout the series as they vie for the champion title “YOLO Board Cup Series” to be awarded after the final race in August. Remaining race dates (weather permitting) are: July 23rd & August 13th. The YOLO Board Stand-Up Paddle Series is made possible by the generous support of presenting sponsor the Aesthetic Clinique and Dr. Steve Weiner.
