Hawaii's one of a kind all stand-up paddle surf contest is back again this year. On September 15th and 16th, Kuhio Beach will be home to the John “Pops” Ah Choy 3rd Annual All Stand-Up Surf Fest.
For the past three years, the John “Pops” Ah Choy Surf Fest has been a family-friendly beach event focusing on the sport of Stand-Up Paddling (SUP) and honoring past and present beach boys while raising awareness and money for charity. It's a two-day event filled with surfing, races, games, and music from local entertainers.
Categories in this year's Surf Fest range from the "Menehune" divisions all the way up to the "Legends" for those 60 and older. At the top of the charts is the professional division, which will offer a monetary first prize. The John “Pops” Ah Choy Surf Fest is known for its unique special divisions, including the “Go Johnny/Jane Go” Relays, the tandem (adult/child) division, and the “Bobby’s Chair” division. And remember, this is done all with a SUP paddle in hand.
In addition to the great surfing, each year the foundation honors beach boys for their continued service. While continuing this tradition, a sand ceremony will be added this year. This special ceremony will return sand taken between the surf spots, “Queens” and “Canoes”, otherwise known as the “Beach Boy Graveyard”. Many beach boys’ ashes have been scattered here, but was pumped out earlier this year to restore Waikiki’s shoreline. To pay respect to those loved ones, the sand ceremony will symbolize a return to their proper resting place.
The contest is open to the public and runs 8AM (7AM check-in)-5PM Saturday, September 15th and Sunday, September 16th. To enter the event, download an entry form at johnpopsahchoy.webs.com
