Kailua-Kona, Big Island of Hawaii (July 19, 2011)—Kona Brewing Company is taking a “stand” as the title sponsor of the 15th Annual Molokai-2-Oahu Paddleboard World Championship Race.  Taking place on Sunday, July 31, 2011, the race will feature more than 250 athletes from 10 countries, as they paddleboard from Molokai’s Kaluakoi Beach to Maunalua Bay on the south side of Oahu.

"We are proud to be the presenting sponsor of the 15th Annual Molokai-2-Oahu Paddleboard World Championship," said Kona Brewing President and CEO Mattson Davis. “The sport is such an integral part of life in Hawaii that we dedicated our latest Aloha Series beer to it, Koko Brown - a brown ale brewed with toasted coconut.  This new addition to our lineup of Kona's bottled beers features vintage artwork depicting a stand up paddler on the waters of Maunalua Bay, the finish line of the race."

In addition, five Kona Brewing ambassadors—athletes who the Brewery supports throughout the year—will compete in the event.  They include Jenny Kambach and Jerry Bess of Hawaii Island, Michael Schwagger of Maui, Andrew Logreco of Oahu, and Candice Appleby of Oahu and California.

Kona Brewing regularly contributes to the community by sponsoring athletes, events and organizations that share the Brewery’s values, primarily those that support environmental sustainability, the ocean, an active lifestyle and Aloha.

Since 1997, M2O has evolved from a casual rivalry among the celebrated watermen of Oahu’s North Shore to the premiere event for the sport of paddleboarding. The race is comprised of four divisions and team relays that include traditional "stock" class boards and an "unlimited open" division that showcases some of the most technically advanced designs and materials from top manufacturers. The race also serves as a fundraiser and this year will benefit four local charities, including the Molokai Community Service Council, Na Kama Kai, Malama Maunalua and The Rell Sunn Education Fund.  For more information, visit Molokai2Oahu.com.
