SAN CLEMENTE, CA (July 17, 2012) — SUP Magazine is pleased to announce that voting has begun in the second annual SUP Awards presented by Body Glove at SUPAwards.com.
SUP magazine created the SUP Awards as standup paddling's highest honor, recognizing the absolute best that this sport has to offer. The SUP magazine editorial staff tediously collects nominations from readers and fans over the first half of the year. Now it's up to paddling fans to rank standup's top five male and female paddlers, pick the Movie of the Year, the Top Expedition and Top Philanthropic Effort.
SUP magazine also presents the Lifetime Achievement Award, given to a legend that has invigorated the sport, as the voting culminates in September. Honorees will be presented at the SUP Awards show presented by Body Glove, Thursday, September 27, 2012 at the historic Casino San Clemente in San Clemente, Calif. Vote now at SUPAwards.com.
"It's an honor to have created such a prestigious award platform and have it really resonate with the paddling community," says SUPmagazine Editor Joe Carberry. "We're pretty humbled by it all. You're talking about some of the best paddling athletes in the world with history in not only standup, but other sports as well like surfing, windsurfing, whitewater and outrigger. Standup culture is so rich and we're proud to be a part of it."
Last year, in a hotly contested vote, Jenny Kalmbach took home the Female Paddler of the Year followed closely by Candice Appleby and Talia Gangini. On the men's side, two under-20 athletes cracked the top three with Connor Baxter winning Male Paddler of the Year honors. Dave Kalama took home second while Slater Trout rounded out the top three. Chris Aguilar's Destination 3, captured Movie of the Year while Bart de Zwart won Expedition of the Year and Paddle for Humanity was named Top Philanthropic Effort. Jay "Sparky" Longley was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Check out photos and video from 2011.
This year, SUP magazine has extended the honors, awarding the Top five paddlers in the Male and Female category. The Top 10 finishers will again be listed in the Winter issue of SUP magazine.
The SUP Awards presented by Body Glove will go off the day before the Rainbow Sandals Gerry Lopez Battle of the Paddle, one of standup's most prestigious races.
SUP magazine is pleased to introduce Body Glove as the presenting sponsor and would also like to thank Kona Brewing, Futures Fins and KRU Vodka for returning to support the event.
