Wednesday, 26 May 2010
Gulf Coast) - With the 2010 SUP race season looming, Slater Trout (Maui, HI) jump started his season by winning the Gulf Coast Stand Up Paddle Championships in Maderia Beach, Florida on Saturday May 22nd. The air temp was 92 degrees with 100 percent humidity... pretty brutal! Regardless of the conditions, Slater kept his eyes on the prize and finished the 9 mile race in 1st place in the Elite Class paddling his 12'6" Bark Competitor, with a time of 1:45.39.
Earlier this month he made a quick trip to Austin, Texas for the SUP Jam Austin. Slater thought Austin's first ever SUP race would be a good opportunity for him to give back to the sport that has given him so much.
"I had a great trip to Austin and really enjoyed meeting everyone there, they were all stoked on SUP. The SUP 101 evening at REI was fun, we had a great turnout and some really good questions. The REI crew was super cool too." said Slater
"Saturdays races and demos went really well, big congratulations to everyone who competed, conditions were great. I really enjoyed being able to get on the water with people who are so excited about the sport and who really enjoy it. Jeff Van Zandt put on a great event, really well done. I look forward to getting back to Austin someday to spend more time, it is an awesome city. A big thanks to my race board sponsor, Surftech, for sending me to the Austin SUP Jam
"The Gulf Coast SUP Championships was an unbelievable experience and race! Ducking under bridges, paddling in the rough gulf of Mexico, thanks again to everyone who supportsme, couldn't do it with out you guys!"
