Speedboard USA has been awarded the historic Coachman’s House Complex in Maudslay State Park in Newburyport, Mass., under the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation’s (DCR) Historic Curatorship Program, in order to launch a premier stand-up paddleboard (SUP) education and training facility.

The Coachman's House Complex is expected to serve as Speedboard USA’s corporate headquarters and offer introductory and advanced SUP training programs and professional development workshops courtesy of its waterside boathouse access. Speedboard’s fitness and training programs will be ideal for paddlers of all levels.

“Speedboard’s plan not only addresses the long term historic preservation needs of this important cultural resource, it also compliments DCR’s mission to encourage healthy outdoor recreational activity,” said DCR Commissioner Edward K. Lambert, Jr.

“When completed based on our plans, our facility will represent a true innovation for the SUP sport,” said Bob Blair, Speedboard USA founder. “Our hope is to attract dedicated athletes seeking to improve their performance in the sport. We believe that our location on the Merrimack River will allow us to host local races into downtown Newburyport and to facilitate the research and design of new Speedboard products.

“With rumors of the SUP sport possibly entering the 2016 Olympics as a demonstration sport, Speedboard USA envisions this facility as an invaluable resource for potential Olympic athletes.”

The Speedboard team currently projects the opening of the SUP education and training facility in the spring of 2014.
