First came the clouds and rain, then thunder & lightning.  What looked like a rained out event actually turned into a beautiful day.  The clouds moved away, the sun came out, and then came the paddlers.  86 of them total, obviously some turned away by the inclement weather. But those who came got a real treat.  The 2nd annual Surf n Sea SUP INTO SUMMER Stand Up Paddle Race, held this previous Saturday June 4th, was a great success!

The weather cleared up, and the conditions were ideal for a great day on the water, lots of sun, light winds, and a fun and scenic course.  The 2 mile laps made the 4 mile race, a bit more of a sprint course.  A forecasted swell brought some little rollers into Pua’ena Pt., just enough to give everybody a fun little push around the rock.  The first paddler came in at 37:23, in the Unlimited (14’ & Over) Division. Those who entered the 12’6 Stock division started rolling in at 39:34, entering them a place in the top 10 for the North Shore’s Fastest Paddler Challenge that was presented by Vitamin Water.  After all the paddlers had come in from the main race, and once the top 10 were rested and rehydrated  we lined them back up for the $1,000 sprint race.

As the paddlers lined up and were ready for their queue to race, everyone on the beach was on their feet, cheering for their friends & family.  As soon as the horn sounded, the 10 were off, and paddling as fast as they could.  2 paddlers took an early lead that led them ahead of the rest & the other 8 were together in a tight pack as they headed for the second turn and then back to Surf n Sea.  After having just raced 4miles, these 10 guys sprint for another 10+ minutes, with Manny Kulukulualani taking the grand prize with a time of 10:05!!  This was an exciting race, with an exciting finish

But the winning didn’t stop there! After the awards ceremony it was time for the prize raffle.  The prize raffle probably lasted close to an hour, as we gave away small goody bags worth $25, up to the top prizes which included a 2-night Turtle Bay stay, and a 12’6 Lahui Kai SUP Race board donated from Surftech.  This was exciting and lots of people walked away with some great stuff.

To conclude the day, we got the kids out in the water and put their skills, and teamwork, to the test.  The keiki relay was a fun challenge for the younger kids who want to do more than just watch mom and dad paddle, they like try too!  All of the kids did great, and they were all winners!

Thanks again to everybody who came out Saturday and spent their day with us here at Surf n Sea.  Hopefully you all had as much fun participating as we did putting on this event!  We are always growing and improving, and would love to hear your feedback.  We cannot get better if we never know what we need to work on.  Please send us your comments and/or concerns.  But do go easy, we are only human too!

Please keep in touch, and stay tuned for more great stuff coming up in the future, such as the Summer Full Moon Paddles.  Hope to see you all there, and in the meantime stay safe out there and stay paddling.
