HONOLULU - What separates Waikiki from every other beach on the planet is the famous Beachboy lifestyle. It involves enjoying the ocean in every way possible from sun-up to sundown, just as it was done by the most legendary Beachboy of all: Duke Kahanamoku. And that's what today, day four of the 10th annual Duke's OceanFest in honor of Duke Kahanamoku, was all about. Four different ocean sports plus beach volleyball served up the action, topped off by the Hawaiian 105KINE Great Hawaiian Luau .
Sixteen teams of longboard surfers left no wave unsurfed at Queens in the Hawaiian Airlines Duke's Legends Surf Classic. In the end, it was defending champions Rainbow Drive-In, led by legendary longboard rider Donald Takayama who clinched the win narrowly over the Kona Brewing team. Today was also the best showing for a women's team at OceanFest: Outrigger Hotels & Resorts' wahine team, led by surfing legend Becky Benson, placed 8th overall having been contenders for the final before the ocean deserted them during their high tide heat. at the Waikiki Aquarium as the sun set into the Pacific Ocean.
The action then churned up the waters out front of Duke's Restaurant Waikiki with the traditional Duke's Waikiki Ocean Mile Swim. Honolulu's Ian Dunham-Wheeler was the first to hit the sand in a time of 19 minutes and one second. The first woman to shore was Ricarda Schellenberg (Honolulu) in 21:17.
The Maui Jim Paddleboard Championship came ashore at Kuhio Beach at noon, having blazed 10 miles from Hawaii Kai. In his 20th race of the season, Maui's Connor Baxter clinched his 18th stand-up paddle (SUP) victory in a time of one hour, 18 minutes and 25 seconds. Big Island's Jenny Kalmbach took the women's SUP line honors. In the traditional paddleboard division, first across the line were Mitchell Peleus (1:25:39 - men) and Candice Appleby (1:35:27 - women).
The beach limelight was reserved for the Kona Longboard Lager Beach Volleyball games. Many don't think of beach volleyball when talking of Waikiki, but the Beachboys have long enjoyed pick-up games with Waikiki tourists and friends when they're taking a break from the waves.
Duke's OceanFest wraps up tomorrow with the final two events: The Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Surfboard Water Polo at Kapahulu breakwall, from 9am-3pm; and the Kahala Challenge beach-tri event at Fort DeRussy, starting at 3pm.
