Welcome to mainland Mexico's Puerto Escondido, none as "Mex Pipe"; where the Southern Hemi Juice meets the shallow sand bars near a once sleepy town and fishing village" Zicatela beach ". Puerto Escondido is famous for it's perfect spitting tubes and during the summer months this beach break can hold some very big surf.
Here are a couple shots from our last trip to Puerto where Scott Chandler, TJ Saemen, Tim Ditty and I followed a solid South Swell and got the goods, tow surfing and Stand up paddling. With a hurricane a hundred miles off the coast the swell was a little lumpy, but we still managed to get some fun 12' to 15'ft bombs.
Two days later the swell and weather cleaned up giving us 4 days of solid 8' - 10' ft surf; making it impossible to paddle our SUP's through the pounding inside section. We used the ski to give taxi rides back through the impact zone and then paddled back to the peak in search of another epic ride.
Riding solid pounding beach break on a SUP has it's challenges and I can honestly say after all the beatings on the close-outs and the long swims to the beach; every wave was worth it"..
Many thanks to Tim Ditty for taking the photos and a huge shout out to Angel Salinas of Central Surf shop for pushing the stand up paddle surfing sport in Puerto. Stay tuned for details about " The Central Surf Paddle Board " SUP Invitational, September 19-22-2008.
