My name is Tod Mehling and I have been SUPing for over 2 years now. I started back in the fall of '06 while out in Maui. I was out there for a windsurf camp and there was no wind for the entire two weeks. A good friend (Alf Imperato) got me into SUP while out there. I started out like others on a HUGE 12' glass and quickly progressed to something smaller. In the end I brought home a board to use here in Florida.
I come from a strong windsurfing/surfing background (worked in a shop for over 10years) , as well as snowboarding (16th season teaching and get 40+ days on the hill). My main spot is New Smynra Beach, Florida where I am out as much as possible but I still do some sessions at my old home break on Long Beach Island, New Jersey.
Thanks to my job (pilot) I am able to get out for about 7 days at a time and then off to work. My wife and I spend a couple of weeks every year in Hawaii so we are able to get into some good waves throughout the year.
The best part about SUP for me is the people. This sport has some great people in it and cannot wait to meet more! I ride PSH boards from Island Surf and Sail in Brant Beach, New Jersey. I have a 10'6, 10' 9'6 All Arounder and a 9'6 Ripper. Also much thanks to Blane Chambers of Paddle Surf Hawaii for making such great boards and giving me great advice.
Thanks to my wife Mia for all the time I make her shoot video at the beach. Everyone is great in this sport and always invite new people to come on out and try it.
Thanks Tod, for sharing your experience with stand up paddling with us and for keeping us all safe in the air. It's truly awesome how many great people you meet in this sport. - Stand Up Paddle Surfing Magazine
