Northwest swell...plenty of waves...only takers...SUP surfers. Stand up paddle surfing could be the answer to all those who have ever, thrown a penny in the well, wishing for epic solo surf sessions. With the unprecedented growth of stand up paddle surfing, you'd think that lineups across the globe would be supersaturated with stand up paddlers, but they're not. Why is this?
Stand up paddle surfing has opened the floodgates allowing all surfers who have been searching for solo sessions to rush out over the ocean and ride untouched waves.
Unknown surfer....solo session. North Shore, Oahu 2007 Stand up paddlers are somewhat of a mystery. Nobody sees them pull into the parking lot and nobody sees them get into the water, but suddenly, they are paddling out to the lineup. What truly is truly mystifying is that after making it out to the lineup, they just keep going. Nobody knows where they are headed or why. but they just keep paddling until they are gone. Then 60-90 minutes later they reappear out of thin air, and with a smile, paddle back to the sand.
The right time...the right place...epic! Stand up paddle surfers are discovering the new frontiers of surfing and are riding waves never before ridden by prone-paddle surfers. The incredible paddling power not only provides the push to get into "unrideable" waves, but also allows surfers to travel greater distances to get to the waves that nobody else can be bothered to paddle out to. To those who have not yet tried the sport, where the stand up guys go is a great mystery. They paddle around the point, down the coast, or out into the ocean where it was thought waves couldn't be found...but the stand up guys know they're out there, and they're clean and pretty. With endless waves, there is almost always a solo session waiting to be found.
