South Walton Fire District Beach Safety Director finishes second in the 18’and under, no multi-hulls division for Team YOLO Board in the 4.5-mile course around Harbor Island

Santa Rosa Beach, FL (December 23, 2008) – Team YOLO announces that locally-adopted Australian-born waterman, Gary Wise, placed second in the 18’ and under, no multi-hulls division in the 1st Annual Cold Stroke Classic on Saturday, December 13, 2008 in Wilmington, North Carolina. Wise’s 14-foot board came in at 45 minutes followed closely behind the first place 18-foot Bark Board which came in at 42 minutes. Team YOLO Board is a division of YOLO Boards, a Santa Rosa Beach-based stand-up paddleboard manufacturer.

Wise serves as the South Walton Fire District Beach Safety Director, and competes in multiple annual standup paddleboard races, including the internationally-celebrated long distance paddleboarding competition QuiksilverEdition Molokai to Oahu Paddleboard Race in Hawaii.

The 1st Annual Cold Stroke Classic included a 4.5 mile course that circled Harbor Island in Wilmington, North Carolina. Wise was among 22 paddlers that braved the chilly 29 degree temperatures, strong currents and cold winds.

“It was great to travel north and compete against the mid-Atlantic paddlers. They’re a strong group of core paddlers who compete on a regular basis and it’s always fun to race against paddlers who are exposed to different conditions. I’m looking forward to competing in future race events they have planned in 2009,” said Wise.

The event hosted two divisions: Recreational Stock 12'6" and under rudderless fixed fin; and an 18' and under, no multi-hulls. A portion of the proceeds from the race benefited the Wrightsville Beach Sea Turtle Project.
