In June 2009, Bobbie Cooper (aged 16, from Birdham) (Sponsors: Kialoa paddles, Gong boards and X-train/2xs tuition) headed down to Gwithian, Cornwall to compete in the second round of the BSUPA stand up paddle surfing championships. The forecast wasn’t looking good, grey, windy, wet and no waves. Luckily on Saturday a small wind swell had formed and allowed “Expression Session” to be held in which Bobbie Cooper battled it out against the other competitors in the mushy conditions, to then claim 2nd place. On Sunday we had better conditions and they were able to hold a women’s wave competition. The conditions were better with bigger and cleaner waves though the wind was still strong along with the odd squall. Bobbie claimed 1st place after a good wave session. Straight after the wave event was the women’s distance race in the mushy conditions that had only gotten worse throughout the morning. The Distance race was challenging and choppy with winds around 20 knots, making it hard to paddle, but the ladies battled on! In the distance, Bobbie Claimed 1st place. Over all Bobbie is very pleased. “I’m ecstatic that I won the two main events, wave and distance, I hope to win the 2009 women’s title after winning the juniors last year. I’d like to thank X-train/2xs for their tuition and also my sponsors, Kialoa and Gong.” The next BSUPA event will be held on the 19th and 20th of September in Swansea/Gower. More for photo...
