I'm really interested in getting into SUP surfing but live in Michigan and don't see a lot of waves (possibility of bigger waves if I head to one of the great lakes, but am only on about a 90 acre lake right now). Anyone have experience with paddling on open water?

If it's worth my time, what's a good board to start with? I haven't been able to find anywhere here to rent one so was thinking about getting a used/inexpensive soft board between 10-12'. All suggestions are welcome!!
